Reading is top priority at Kelley Smith Elementary School, making the media center a essential part of the school. Materials for the media center are selected to support not only reading but to enhance the other curricular areas. Students’ reading level and interests as well as curricular needs are taken into consideration during collection development. Recommendations and requests from students, parents, and staff are also appreciated and taken into consideration when purchasing new books, magazines, videos, computer software, and equipment.
Mission of Media Program: The mission of the Kelley Smith Elementary School Media Program is to ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. This mission is accomplished by providing intellectual and physical access to materials in all formats; by providing instruction to foster competence and stimulate interest in reading, viewing, and using information and ideas; and by working with other educators to design learning strategies to meet the needs of individual students.
Media Center Circulation Policies: Students check out books for a two week period. Books may be returned early or renewed if needed longer. Kindergarten and first grade students may check out one book and second through fifth grade students may check out two books. Proper book care is expected of all students. It is the student’s responsibility to return books on time. Damaged or lost books must be paid for by the student who borrowed it before the student may check out another book.
Hours of Operation: The media center is open to students from 8:15 – 3:00, Monday through Friday. Students and parents are welcome to check-out books and use the available resources. Students visit the media center with their classroom teachers once a week. Individual students are welcome in the media center on an as needed basis.
Reading Counts: Reading Counts is a software program that measures a student’s reading comprehension. Students read books on their Reading Counts level; and then they take a quiz to find out how well they have comprehended what they read. Students earn points for each Reading Counts quiz that he/she passes. Prizes are given based on the number of points the student has.
